Former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadjo Kyerematen has raised questions about the financing approach for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, particularly the decision to commit about $4 billion to the project. According to Mr Kyerematen, government should consider whether a major commercial road such as the Accra–Kumasi Expressway could attract funding from the private sector rather than relying entirely on public financing. He questioned the rationale behind using such a significant amount of government-related financing for a project that could potentially generate revenue through tolls and other commercial arrangements. “You have $4 billion, and you are using it to finance a commercial road that could be funded by the private sector?” Mr Kyerematen asked. His comments have drawn attention to the broader debate over how Ghana should finance major infrastructure projects while managing limited public resources. The Accra–Kumasi corridor is a major transport route connecting the southern and middle parts of the country, and improvements to the route are expected to have implications for trade, transportation and economic activity.
