Education Minister, and Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has hinted that, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will meet with the teacher unions on Tuesday, October 6, to continue negotiations on their collective agreement and conditions of service.
He made the announcement after a meeting between the government team and representatives of GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG on Monday, September 28, 2026, as part of governmentâs efforts to resolve the ongoing strike by the teacher unions.
Mr. Iddrisu said the discussions were open and focused on finding solutions to the concerns raised by the unions.
He said government had appealed to the unions to call off the strike while negotiations continue.
âThe Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will meet with the teacher unions next Tuesday to continue negotiations on their collective agreement and conditions of service,â he underlined.
The Minister also announced the formation of a validation committee to examine data relating to governmentâs commitment to pay a 20 percent rural deprived area allowance. He said the committee, to be led by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, would include representation from the teacher unions.
Hon. Iddrisu said government remained committed to implementing the allowance from January 2027, subject to the validation of the data and agreement on a clear roadmap.
On the issue of salaries for teachers who have been promoted, he said the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) had been tasked to submit the relevant data to the Controller and Accountant-General for processing.
The MP further indicated that, the exercise would continue through the weekend, with regional directors and officers responsible for entering the data expected to support the process.
According to him, government currently has data on about 29,000 teachers in relation to the outstanding arrears, while the full process is expected to cover nearly 80,000 promoted teachers.
Mr. Iddrisu explained that September salaries had already been processed, making it impossible to reverse.
"Controller and Accountant-General would therefore take steps to include the outstanding payments in the October salaries, including any supplementary payments that may arise", the Minister concluded.
The government says the measures are intended to address the concerns of the teacher unions while discussions continue on their conditions of service and other outstanding issues.
