President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday inaugurated an 85-bed Ward Complex at the Police Hospital in Accra.

The facility, named after the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, brings the Police Hospital's total bed capacity to a little over 300.

It provides a dedicated paediatric facility with separate male and female children’s wards.

It is the first of its kind for children after five decades of operation and has a separate male and female surgical and medical wards.

The 85-ward Complex has executive wards for commissioned and retired officers and other suitable officials.

The ward also has diagnostic and monitoring devices and fitted with an elevator to transport patients, medical equipment, and supplies safely and efficiently between floors.

The facility has a pharmacy and laboratory equipment, an in-house laboratory to support timely testing and diagnosis, administrative offices to support effective day-to-day ward operations; and a car park with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles and a welfare shop providing basic necessities for patients and non-patients.

Present at the event included the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka.

Inaugurating the facility, President Mahama charged the hospital’s management to uphold the highest standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical practice, and to ensure regular servicing of equipment, availability of medicines and consistent maintenance.

“The value of this facility will be measured by the quality of care that it delivers and by how well it is maintained over time,” he said.

He thanked the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians and support staff, urging them to treat patients with dignity, compassion and respect.

President Mahama said the country was safer today than it was before, citing the testimony of a bus driver who now travels even at 2 a.m. without fear of highway robbery and a reduction in unresolved murders.

He said the Ghana Police Service, under Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, was doing a good job, and commended the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Police Intelligence Department and the Police Cyber Unit for their work.

“Our country is safer today than it was before,” President Mahama intimated .

For his part, Mr. Yohuno said facility formed part of the broader effort to strengthen the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.

A healthy, professional, disciplined and people-centred Police Service, he said was essential to maintaining security and supporting national development.

“Completing this modern facility is an important achievement but maintaining it to the highest standard is equally important. The Police Administration therefore commits to ensuring the complex is managed responsibly and maintained properly,” he emphasized.

“Exactly a year ago, I stood here to cut the sod for this project,” he remarked.
