Head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, Carlos Manuel Brito Leal de Queiroz, has, in a post-match press briefing stated that, his record in international football has not yet been broken, insisting that the Black Stars’ latest defeat to The Gambia does not make him a loser.

Queiroz made the remarks after Ghana suffered a painful 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday. September 29, 2026.

Fortunes of the Black Stars continue to dwindle after taking a two-goal lead in the 13th and 19th minutes, but their hope quickly disappeared as The Gambia staged a remarkable comeback to score four goals and leave Ghana without a point from their opening two matches in Group C.

The defeat has increased pressure on Carlos, with questions already being raised about his future following Ghana’s poor start to the qualifying campaign.

However, the Portuguese tactician remained defiant when asked about his credentials and the significance of the latest result.

“I’m still the coach with the record for most wins in international football. This result doesn’t make me a loser,” Queiroz said.

His comments come after he earlier revealed that he would be willing to resign if the Ghana Football

Association believes his departure would provide a solution to the problems facing Ghana football.

“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” he said.

Queiroz returned to the Black Stars following Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was tasked with guiding the team towards qualification for the 2027 AFCON.

But the campaign has started badly, with Ghana first losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouake before suffering Tuesday’s collapse against The Gambia at home.

The results leave the Black Stars facing an uphill battle in their attempt to secure qualification for the continental tournament, having already missed the 2025 AFCON.

Despite the mounting pressure, Queiroz’s comments suggest that he remains confident in his experience and his ability to lead the team.

The GFA will now have to assess the situation as Ghana prepares for the remaining matches in the qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars needing a significant turnaround to revive their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
